ATHLETE BLOG LEOMINSTER

Nothing makes our job easier than a needs list from sport coaches.
Here's two quick examples of why this is true.
We have a younger soccer goalie who is moving to a bigger net next season. Her coach wants her covering more ground, and improving foot quickness.
Currently this athlete was only doing Speed School, a nice way to build athleticism but not the best fit for attacking the coach's specific suggestions.
Building leg strength and power is where her focus needs to be, along with an increase in core strength.
We suggested she change to Group Personal Training, allowing us to spend more time training leg and core strength.
Thanks to a nice communication stream, from coach to parent to performance trainer, this goalie is on track to be ready for the challenges of defending a bigger net.
Another athlete had the opposite problem.
This guy loved lifting, but his hockey coach encouraged him to get faster if he wanted to shine against tougher competition next year.
It took some effort to convince this strong, powerful athlete of the benefits of speed and agility training.
But once they came around, improvement flowed naturally.
With more opportunity to move at full speed, their coordination improved. They got faster on the track, and on the ice.
Competing against other speedy athletes also improved their reaction time and change of direction, helping them play even faster than their stopwatch speed.
When fall season arrived, and this athlete went up against better competition than he'd ever faced before, he more than held his own.
My point in sharing these two stories is simple.
The more honest feedback sports performance professionals get from sport coaches, the more productive the training session.
Workouts become more relevant for the athlete, making it easier to show up and work hard.
Training is all about next season, putting the time in well ahead, knowing bodies don't magically transform overnight.
This summer, we are rolling out a new goal review system for all the athletes consistently showing up in our program.
Feedback from sport coaches on how to best use the critical summer training period will be essential to this process.
But whether your kid is training with us right now, or not, work to ensure the parent-coach-trainer communication lines flow as seamlessly as possible.
