The Only 3 Reasons You Haven't Improved As Quickly As You Want

The Only 3 Reasons You Haven't Improved As Quickly As You Want

March 03, 20244 min read

So you're working out on a regular basis, whether you wanted to or were pressured into it.

But you're doing it, showing up and following everything you're told to do

As did someone else, a friend perhaps, or a stranger, and you notice they are working out just as often as you.

After a few months, you notice that person is getting amazing results!

They're much stronger, they move better, and even seem to carry themselves with more confidence.

You, however, are improving at a far slower rate.

Yeah you're better, but not like that other person.

What gives?

There are few things in life that are more fair than the results you get from a workout program.

No concerns about referees or umpires costing you a win.

No coaches who don't play you enough.

Even better, there's very little genetic advantage to one person developing faster than another.

By and large, the improvements you see are a direct result of how you're approaching your training.

If you're the person showing up to the gym on a regular basis, but not seeing results as fast as some others, I can tell you that the reason is almost certainly one of these three.

Your Nutrition Isn't Keeping Up With Your Training

Exercise is what stimulates your body to change, but it's what you eat and drink that allows it to happen.

Protein rebuilds broken down muscle, tendons and other cells into stronger versions of themselves.

Healthy carbohydrates and fats give you the energy to train at a high level.

Eating veggies, drinking water, and having a moderate amount of fruit keeps your immune system in top shape, so you don't get derailed due to sickness.

If you're missing the boat on this end, it's going to limit your gains.

This goes double for those looking to build muscle or lose fat. You don't just need the right foods, but you'll need the right amounts of them too.

Regular exercise paired with good nutrition always leads to faster and more noticeable progress.

You Aren't Doing The Right Things To Hit Your Goals

We trainers have a lot of stupid little acronyms that no one really gets but us.

One of them is the 'SAID' Principle, which stands for Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands.

See? I told you they were stupid.

All it means is that your body changes based on exactly what you do.

Lift heavy weights and you gain strength.

Go on long bike rides or runs and you improve endurance.

We won't go too far into the weeds on this one, but if you aren't seeing the results you want it's possible you're simply following the wrong workout program.

I'll give 2 common examples to illustrate the point.

A lot of athletes want to get faster or improve their vertical jump, but spend most of their time in the gym doing arm drills.

You don't jump off your biceps!!!!

It's no wonder you foolishly think running faster or jumping higher is based only on genetics.

On the adult side, I've seen a lot of people who want to get more of a toned look avoid weight training like I avoid brussels sprouts.

The muscle is what builds the look, raises your resting metabolism, and helps you maintain an active lifestyle.

If all you're doing is cardio and you're not happy with how you look, it's time to hit the weights.

The SAID Principle...we are all at the mercy of it.

You Aren't Training Hard Enough

Too often we fool ourselves by believing that doing something that's good for us is all it takes to succeed.

Showing up is half the battle, yes, but no one ever said it was the whole battle.

The other half comes from how hard you push.

What are you better at when you walk out the door compared to when you walked in?

Develop the mindset that a workout is only helpful when you can list a series of things you improved on that day, and the results will surely roll your way.

This means pushing beyond your comfort zone, doing things you may fail at, and dealing with a bit more pain than you'd ordinarily take on.

But that's where the results are.

And if you're going to put in the time to improve, doesn't it make sense to do everything you can to make sure it's actually making a difference for you?

There's no one else to blame, no one to scapegoat.

The journey to successful training rests entirely in your hands.
